Our Beginnings

The Grants Pass Sister City Committee is a non-profit organization affiliated with Sister Cities International. Our Sister City is Rubtsovsk, Russia, located in south central Siberia, near the border of Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan and Russia.

The Grants Pass, Rubtsovsk sister city relationship was formalized in 1990 after whitewater rafters from Sister Cities International was created at President Eisenhower’s 1956 White House summit on citizen diplomacy, where he envisioned a network that would be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world.

With a mission to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – the two cities met at an international competition during the late years of the Cold War. the mayors of Grants Pass and Rubstovsk signed an agreement to develop a friendship between the two peoples and stimulate economic and cultural cooperation. New friendships and lasting relationships has been made. Some Grants Pass delegations have contributed medical supplies, books, and sewing machines for the blind to the people of Rubtsovsk.
